The Friends of Children Corner has evolved through the years to keep pace with our growing understanding about teaching learning processes. In its latest avatar the mela is called – The Thinkers Hub.
For thinking is in! In recent years there has been growing interest across the world in ways of developing children’s thinking and learning skills. This interest has been fed by new knowledge about how the brain works and how people learn, and evidence that specific interventions can improve children’s thinking and intelligence.
We feel that the mastery of the ‘basics’ in education (literacy, maths, science etc.), however well taught, are not sufficient to fulfill human potential. Individuals cannot ‘store’ sufficient knowledge in their memories for future use. Information is expanding at such a rate that individuals require transferable skills to enable them to address different problems, in different contexts, at different times throughout their lives.
So the “Friends of Children Corners” have morphed into ‘The Thinkers Hub’ – the thinking melas, and focus on the task of ‘practicing thinking’ in the context of school subjects. We hope to show the parents and teachers visiting ‘The Thinkers Hub’, that learning could easily be made up of hands on experiences instead of just writing in note-books…and that the whole school experience could consist of lots of opportunities for deep thinking instead of just cramming text-books.
